"Professor Zabini." Travis said. "we're here on the invitation of Professor Johnson. He asked us to use our expertise and check the security of the multiple commonrooms. Apparently there are some breaches, there were rumours of theft last year."

"I said Run Along," said Zabini. He was too wise to engage in a battle of words with Travis Liek, who could argue that Sunday was Wednesday and make you apologise for the weather.

"I like your rings" Ronja said. "That's some fine emeralds."

Zabini smiled.
“How nice of you to say so Miss Liek, they are very fine aren’t they?”
He held up his hands and displayed his rings.
“And I know how many there are, where they are and I want to keep them, so keep your larcenous little eyes and hands off them.”
The smile vanished.
“If you two don’t leave immediately and without another word you will lose more points and start your school year in detention. Go.”

Travis trew Travers his wand back and then placed his hand on Ronja's shoulder guiding her out. He did not fear detention, but he did not want to get expelled.

Liam stayed grim and silent as many of the other Slytherins hooted with laughter at the retreat of the intruder. He glanced at Travers and then looked over at Finn as if seeking... what?

Finn gave a nod, that nobody who was not looking for it would have noticed. Travers was always going to have to fall, but this... perhaps hurried along some decisions.
Relaxing and grinning at Barbara he said "Well that was a bit of drama wasn't it? Nice to see Ronja again"

Travers did not feel the triomph of the others. He did not like the ease with which Liek had disarmed him, and did not understand how the girl had evaded his spell. The Lieks had not lost, they'd simply stopped fighting when the teacher had come in.
And even though there was a teacher.. the Lieks had been taught nothing.
He got up and walked to Megan. "Liek's targetting you." he said. "tell me what you know of him."

Megan was not going to go along with this.
"Do please remember your manners, Uri," she said in an almost apologetic voice, "and calm down before you make a spectacle of yourself. More of a spectacle."

"You are better than this, Megan. You know we can't allow Liek to enter here unpunished. The family already fails to respect their betters."

She smiled at him then turned away and said to Jocasta. "I think paler colours will be more popular this season"

She had of course no idea that even most Healers had never heard of antibiotics in their life.

Barbara finished her drink and placed the empty bottle on the table.
"Do you know Salazar's reasoning?" she said, looking at the ornamental snakes that lined the hearth. "To only accept certain.. blood types?"

"Salazar's reasoning?" said Finn curiously, "that's going right back to the days of the Founders, way before simple prejudice."
He sat back in the chair a faraway look in his eyes, remembering old lessons.
"Some of it's in Hogwarts, a History but you have to read between the lines," he went on, "the rest of it's in obscure elemental theories. According to these theories, that were believed way back in those days, everything in the universe is made up of four elements. Earth - representing stability, inertia, strength and unchangingness. Air representing intellect, wit, swiftness, motion. Water representing emotion, instinct, passivity, and Fire representing transformation, dynamism and change."
He looked around to make sure he wasn't being overheard in this long winded and rather Ravenclaw explanation, while the rest of the Common Room were crowing about Travis being thrown out.
"People are made up of the elements too. On a personality level I mean. But some wizards and witches thought there was more of an essential component of elemental force determining what a person was. Magical folk are stronger in Air and Fire you see, according to this theory. They act upon things, rather than being acted on. They cause change, they cause transformation. Wizards and Witches are Air and Fire in the largest proportions. Non magical folk who make up the majority of humanity are the unchanging stable ones, guided more by their emotions. They're Earth and Water. Salazar believed that too many of that sort would hold back progress, would slow down the drive toward purer magical discovery."

"No idea," said Finn. "But one thing I learned last year-"
He suddenly seemed animated, excited almost.
"I've got a friend from the village who's a Muggle," he said, "and he was telling me about the Muggle Bible. Well, the religious book of the local Muggles anyway. It's got a whole chapter about how Muggles were created. And guess what the first Muggle was made from?"
